One day, my youngest daughter came home from school and sheepishly admitted, “Mom my friend Gary (names have been changed to protect the innocent – and under aged) called you a milf. I’m sorry.” She apologized to me for what she perceived as his rude behavior. If you don’t know, MILF stands for “Mothers I’d like to… well you get the point. The question is: should single moms be flattered or indignantly insulted by the reference?

I got to thinking. Is being called a MILF such a bad thing? Is there a way to spin a positive with this stature I’d been bestowed? What I discovered is by simply adding an extra “F” to the acronym, I’d come up with something I can wholeheartedly embrace. It is “Mothers Into Looking Fit and Fabulous”! It is definitely saying what that kid meant, but in a much more mature and mom-appropriate way. It is everything I stand for and believe in and a designation I’d like every healthy living single mom to embrace.

Here are 5 solid reasons why:

Kerri Zane discusses the 5 reasons you want to be called a MILF

1. All that exercising has been worth the effort.

Not only has the time spent in the gym garnered a broad base of male attention, it has also provided 360 degrees of inside and outside happiness.  Physical fitness experts have found that the better a client looks on the outside the better she feels on the inside. Consequently, the better she feels on the inside the more confident she projects on the outside. Male or female, young or old, everyone is attracted to a confident person. So when a young boy thinks you’re hot, he’s just responding to his natural human tendency. The side benefit; if a self-absorbed male teen is catching a glimpse of your inside/outside glow; I guarantee you his more grown-up counterpart noticed it too.

2. The beauty treatments are paying dividends, big-time.

All the money invested in injectables, periodic nip/tucks, lasers, IPL’s, lash extensions, lotions and potions are working. Not only do you look younger, you are attracting younger men….They can look and admire, but no touching. Secretly inside be happy they’re noticing. You’ve made it. You’re “Stacy’s MOM, you got it goin’ on!” Thx  Fountains of Wayne.

3. Beauty is attractive.

My friend and colleague, Dr. Gordon Patzer, The Dean of the College of Business Administration at Roosevelt University, has spent 30 years studying and writing about physical attractiveness. Bottom line; everyone enjoys admiring beauty, including infants in hospital nurseries who have been shown to look at attractive faces longer and more intently. Ladies, give the boys a break, their need to ogle is hardwired into their DNA.

4. Would you prefer they not notice?

Be honest? All women yearn to be seen as desirable and attractive to men. No matter how young or old, we instinctively know how to bat our eyelashes and demurely smile to get the desired acknowledgment from the male species. We can’t help it either. Anthropological scientists claim that women, more than men, are hardwired to put more emphasis on looks. It is the survival mechanism encoded into our DNA.

5. Be a cougar.

You can move forward in your life with the comfort and knowledge that you can successfully cougar if you want to! Just make sure the guy you pick is street legal and not your daughter’s classmate.

So, I for one am embracing the compliment; I love the idea that a young man would find this hard-working single mom attractive!
