Today while with my mother and my grandfather we were talking about a conversation that my grandfather had with another man who lives in the same building, it was about politics. Then my mother comes out about how there are three things that you should never talk about in public, politics, religion and sex! What gets me about what my mother said is that you can not turn on the TV or radio or anything media related, to hear about one of those three topics. But out of those three, sex is what sells.
Why is Sex Such a Hot Topic?
Here is the reason why. Sex is usually a very private moment between two people and that, in many ways, is how it should remain. But if you are talking about celebrities, or anyone famous, even Royals, the topic goes from something people do every day to a hot topic.
I Must Know More!
Lets take what happened not too long ago to Prince Harry. I do feel bad for the young man. A few weeks ago he was in Las Vegas having some fun, cutting loose and enjoying life (which a lot of us do when we are in Las Vegas … am I right?). Pictures of him naked with a young lady got released to a gossip TV/online site and the pictures went virile. I don’t think you could turn on the TV, log on the Internet or turn on the radio with out hearing about it. The sad part is that he had to apologize to his grandmother the Queen of England about it. I thought that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, not on almost every cover of every magazine in the grocery store. Come on who really cares anymore and really, why do we even care to begin with? Are all of our own sex lives so boring and dull that we have to know about every one else’s? Well at least I hope not!
If Sex Sells Why Is It Taboo?
I think we make it a taboo topic because it is supposed to be something private between two people. We have been taught
since a young age that good girls and boys don’t talk about sex or having sex. But is it really such a taboo topic? Get a group of modern woman together and some cocktails and we can talk about not only our own sex lives but we can talk about others sex lives too (maybe men do this too). But we also live in an age where you cannot look up the word sex without finding a bunch of porn sites, sex related paraphernalia, etc. Sex is all around us, yet we should not talk about it publicly.
Personally, I do understand that yes talking about sex openly around friends is okay, but it is always smart to know your audience too and your surroundings. So maybe when it comes to talking about sex we should leave it when and where it happens, or with friends that are okay with it. Just think if we did not have sex to talk about, all we would have is politics, religion and maybe the weather every now and then. What a boring world that would be!!
