Is there anything as exciting as a summer or vacation fling? I think not. I used to think it was just because I was young and flirting and ‘young love’ was all so exciting but I don’t think that’s it anymore. There is something about the freeing about getting away from the hassles of your everyday life. When you are on vacation reality stops existing and you become a lighter, happier, and more electric version of yourself. I know it’s not just me. You smile brighter, breathe easier, and feel better when you are away from the physical reminds of your stress (i.e. familiar roads with traffic, work, family, etc).
You can relax, lounge poolside of on the beach, and just enjoy being pursued and pursuing. To me there is no rush, no flirtation high, like a vacation fling. I’ve not had a ton of them but the ones I’ve had are memorable. I can remember them like they were yesterday. I’ll share one of the better trips with you.
If I ever need a boost I’m going back to Greece because those men adored me. Whether it was men on motorcycles trying to convince me to head for a spin around Athens or men at beach bars spoiling me it was non-stop. It wasn’t until I was on a cruise around the Greek Islands that I met somebody who really caught my eye though. While the attention was nice the skinny jeans and typical European look wasn’t working for me. It took Ace, a strikingly handsome 6’3”, broad shouldered, light skinned Pilipino, with a smile so dazzlingly white I lost my breath to get my attention.
I had seen him around the ship, but since the staff cannot “associate” with passengers, talking to him was difficult. In the end he sent a sweet note with my maid/towel animal maker/pajama folder that said, “I’d really like to meet the lovely girl with the beautiful brown eyes. Sun deck 9:30 pm. Ace” How does a 17 year old resist the implied romance of a forbidden cruise ship rendezvous
I know you are cringing since cruise staff have a reputation for their philandering but I’ll reiterate that I was 17 and smitten. Needless to say at 9:30 that night I was up on the desk, standing at the railing, looking up at the starts over the black expanse of water, and hoping he would show up. Ace came up behind me, placing his arms around me, resting his chin on my head, and looking out with me. I leaned back into him and we just stood there, not saying a thing for a while.
I spent the night curled up with him on a lounge chair.
As it turned out Ace was a pretty nice guy, working on the ship to see the world, and send money back to his parents and siblings. I thought this was incredibly mature and responsible of him at 22 and by the end of the night had a hopeless crush on him. I was finally pulled myself from his warm embrace and into my room at 5am. There was no sleep just a shower and getting ready for our excursion that day. Being tired was worth it to me and I smiled all day long.
The next night was too cold to spend outside all night and since he wasn’t supposed to be seen with me he decided to give me a behind the scenes tour of the boat. It was probably really stupid heading to the staff section not knowing this guy I didn’t think twice about it. I distinctly remember going out on a small shielded balcony and watching the water off the back of the boat. We were so low to the water it sprayed up at us and I remember just leaning into him and letting him hold me. He showed me his room but we didn’t stay since his roommate was there. For the rest of the night we walked around, holding hands, and kissing.
Vacation flirtations are memories that last a lifetime.
It was a very sweet little vacation romance. There was restrained passion, the thrill of the forbidden, late nights, and lips plump from kissing all night. We talked, we got to know one another, and we enjoyed each other for 9 days/nights. I will always remember him with a smile on my face and a bit of a flutter in my tummy. Something about the youth and innocence of this encounter makes it one of my favorites.
