A way with words by @PenMyProfile

What was your first word? Mummy? Dad? Banana? From day dot we’re pushed, prodded and coached to take in vocabulary and, for the best part, we
Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs –Pearl Strachan
all get on fine. That is, until we’re challenged to sit down and write A Really Hard Thing.

Whether it’s a CV, letter to a friend, competition entry or online dating profile

– at the heart of the Really Hard Thing’s success is the words that we choose to use.

It would help if the dictionary was a clear-cut guide that helped out with negative and positive connotations – but with, for example, ‘great guy’ ‘lovely’ ‘cute’ and ‘simple’ meaning different things to every person, dating profiles in particular are a minefield of words. Both in how you choose to describe yourself (‘Oh god, I’d never describe myself as handsome, it sounds really arrogant) but also how people may react to your profile online (‘She says she’s bubby – no way, I want someone intelligent.)

A Dating Profile that Attracts Matches Online

So, how can you navigate that minefield and pen a profile that will attract matches online?

We are PenMyProfile.com and our job is just that. With an expert team of writers who either edit something you’ve already written, or write something from scratch after a friendly consultation, we spend our days tip-toeing through words and their meaning.

In fact, as part of our consultation we even ask words that our customers do and don’t like when they are being described – and would you believe it, the same offenders crop up time and time again! In the same way, there’s certain words that we know from experience are real turn-offs to potential matches.

Atom Bomb Words to Avoid

So, as #SWEXPERTS newbies, for the delectation and deliberation of the SW community, we wanted to share with you as our welcome gift our top five ‘atom bomb’ words to avoid.

  1. Big-hearted – an honourable thing to be, but our experience has shown people associate this with a larger body size.
  2. Bubbly – comes across as ditzy and lacking in intelligence
  3. Banker – a sign of the times, but this is a real turn-off! Say you are ‘in finance’ and win someone over with your personality in a few messages.
  4. Back on the market – you may well be dipping your toe back in the dating pool, but it comes across as a little desperate.
  5. ‘Safe words’ – anything that you might use to describe your nanna is a no; be different! So that includes ‘Kind’ ‘nice’ ‘friendly’ – you know the score.

And that’s why dating is such a minefield. How can you win someone over when everyone is speaking a different language?!

    Seven Dates a Week

So true – the words we use in messages and in our profiles are so important in online dating, because our first impressions are almost completely verbal! Great list of “bomb” words.

Great list. I also think people need to try to be a little bit more original in their profiles. I can’t count how many times i’ve read profiles from guys that begin, “I’m just a laid-back and easygoing guy…” That may be so but share something that makes you stand out. I don’t want to date a puppy. 🙂

Perfect Bomb list! I think some people are afraid to be original and themselves for fear they don’t have enough swag. Boils down to confidence and really thinking about what they post before they post it. I had friends review my profile before I posted and it was the best thing I could have done! They knew me and called me out when something wasn’t quite right or seemed ‘canned’. A wonderful post!
