I have mentioned before that romance is definitely dead, yet it appears I have been proven wrong on a quite dramatic scale. The following video is an incredibly innovative, romantic marriage proposal from the great US of A.
That may have worked extremely well in America, known for its OTT-ness in everything it has and does (drive-thru Starbucks, OK maybe, but drive-thru banks – seriously?!) but can you imagine something this sweet working in England? I’m thinking great deals of spiteful laughter, popcorn thrown at the couple, jokes being made, and people complaining about it wasting time before playing the film that they paid a lot of money to see.
The film itself is incredibly gentlemanly and good old-fashioned romance, because the groom-to-be asks his girlfriends father for permission to marry his daughter. It is this permission part of the proposal that hits home most of all, for me. THAT is good old-fashioned romance, all by itself. Of course, anyone who wishes to marry me must ask for my fathers permission, mainly because all the whining and moaning about not being asked is just not worth it. But if he says no, ignore him – he’s just being over-protective. I have visions of him not letting go of my arm after walking me down the aisle. But remember, everyone, that the brides father often pays for a lot of the wedding, so it is best to do whatever it takes to remain in his good books.
Perhaps I am being bitter, negative and, to be honest, rather judgmental of British society, but this will remain as my opinion until some romantic couple proves me wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I think this proposal is amazing, but keep the idea on that side of the Atlantic. And whatever you do, do not make me the test subject for this kind of proposal in Britain.
I wish this lucky couple all the best.
xoxo
